No one should ever feel unsafe…
Project Mama Bear is an endeavor to help those in need. Mother bears are some of the most ardent defenders of their family in nature. In the world of hospitality, every guest deserves to feel safe, no matter what. All too often, women are subjected to harassment, offensive behavior, unwanted advances, sexual assault, domestic violence, and more. A bar, or restaurant’s patrons deserve to feel safe, and to know that the staff will do their best to create such an environment for them. However it is common for these situations to go unnoticed, or to occur in too subtle a way for a bustling staff to notice, and this is when women don’t get the help they need.
Project Mama Bear is a way to help those who may not know how to ask for it. By simply ordering a “Mama Bear” cocktail from a server or bartender, what the guest is really asking for is help. They are using this drink order as a way to alert staff and management to their situation. This tells the staff it is time to step in, and take whatever measures deemed appropriate to rectify this situation, and ensure the patron is safe. Other cities have similar programs, and I believe it is time Orange County joined the fold. To my knowledge, no such program currently exists, so time to step up.
By putting materials and instructions in areas of the business where only women would see - restrooms usually - businesses can inform their female customers on how the process works. So, if they feel unsafe at all, or are experiencing any type of unwanted advances or, something potentially much worse, they can use this phrase to alert the staff, and get the help they need. It is a pledge to do more - to end harassment and violence towards women, who are simply trying to enjoy themselves at an establishment the same as anyone else.
Put this logo in your place of business, place the instructions, and inform your staff, and let women know that they will always have support here, and a way to feel safe. End the cycle, and let the world know that Mama’s watching.
